 400 families relieved

The National Society of the Haitian Red Cross is to make the delivery of 400 houses for vulnerable families in Gonaives. These houses of 22 square meters relieve the 400 beneficiary families have been victims of bad weather caused by hurricanes Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike in 2008.

 

 

400 houses in 32 villages scattered over a radius of 20 kilometers around the city of Gonaives, have been built to assist families affected by devastating floods caused by hurricanes Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike in 2008. The delivery of these houses to 400 families benefiting from this project took place the weekend passed by the leaders of the National Society of the Haitian Red Cross, attended by local politicians in the city, whose mayor Senior Gonaives Stephen Moses, who spoke on this occasion on behalf of victims of recent floods.

Given the thousands of families who are struggling to Gonaives, the 400 families in the project were actually selected on clearly defined criteria. Several evaluations, explain officials of the Red Cross, were made in the beneficiary communities for a careful selection of these families. "The most vulnerable were selected using a combination of several criteria of vulnerability, they say. The elderly (over 60), persons with disabilities (physical or mental), women with more than three children under 5 years and the level of destruction of the house (destroyed, damaged, flooded) were in fact the criteria, "they said.

During an official ceremony held in the town of Gonaives Desfontaines, beneficiaries have expressed their satisfaction with a project like "how praiseworthy, think they, after receiving their certificates of donation signed jointly by the Red Cross Haiti and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent. And, besides houses discounts, mosquito nets, cooking utensils and cleaning products were also distributed to these 400 families vulnerable among many in Gonaives. The martyred city which in recent years has been frequently hit by major storms.

Meanwhile, a delivery of houses to beneficiaries, an eye clinic opened in the circumstance has caused the distribution of spectacles and medicines to the needy. Depending on the diagnosis, some 500 people have benefited from this initiative.

To make possible the realization of this project, officials have mobilized more than 100 builders who have completed the construction of walls, 110 carpenters for laying roofing, 400 carpenters to manufacture the 800 doors and windows 1 200.

"To ensure sound project ownership, the Red Cross has used the EU approach to ensure the interests of beneficiaries, who have contributed with sand for the manufacture of blocks, erection of walls and the establishment of beams, stressed officials, who thanked all those who participated in the success of this project, especially the volunteers of the Regional Committee of Upper Artibonite and staff coordination with representatives from the Federation and executives of the Haitian Red Cross.

This project falls within the scope of relief and assistance to victims of the 2008 hurricane season done closely with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, has claimed about 200 000 U.S. dollars.
